Description

The crows, emblem of the capital of Portugal

Pearl of the Iberian Peninsula, Lisbon seems to float on the Tagus. Dominating the bay of the river that flows into the Atlantic Ocean, the city combines tradition and modernity. From the Castelo de São Jorge to the Commerce Square from which the great explorers left, through the Cathedral to the Belém Tower and the 1998 World Expo site, the Portuguese capital offers views grandiose. The story of his coat of arms is just as wonderful. It tells how the remains of Saint Vincent of Zaragoza, the first martyr of Spain, have been under the protection of crows for many centuries. When he died in the 3rd century, crows prevented scavengers from approaching the body. Since the Christians brought the body of the holy martyr to Cape St. Vincent in southern Portugal in 779 by boat, the crows have been keeping his grave. When finally the relics of St. Vincent were raised to the royal city and its Cathedral, still by boat, by the first king of Portugal, Alfonso Henriques, in 1173, the crows escorted the nave throughout the crossing. The shield representing the nave floating on the water, with the sail of raised silver, flanked by two crows, is surmounted by the royal crown. Under the shield, the coat of arms is completed with a list of the city’s motto: "Mui nobre e sempre leal cidade de Lisboa", which translates to "The most noble and most loyal city of Lisbon".
